GeMUN 2023

Our school, represented by 23 students, joined the 20th edition of the Genoa Model United Nations from 23rd to 25th February 2023. It was a great opportunity to truly get a grasp of the world of diplomacy debating in some of the most beautiful and historic palaces (palazzo Ducale, palazzo Doria-Spinola, Camera di Commercio).

500 students coming from 17 different schools (9 Italian and 8 from abroad: Saudi Arabia, Denmark, France, Israel, Turkey, Germany) showed great passion and interest in discussing key events of today’s world. The conference title “Echoes of our Times” reminds us of how interconnected our economies are, how causes and effects resonate through time and space in the medium and long term. In such challenging and uncharted waters, constructive dialogue has a key role to define alternative social perspectives and new solutions to current conflicts.

Among the Agenda topics and the involved Committees we can mention the following as examples:

• Tracking the migrant crisis at the Darien Gap (GA: General Assembly)
• Handling civil unrest under repressive authoritharian regimes (SOCHUM: Social, Cultural, Humanitarian Committee)
• Disrupting youth terrorist recruitment through social media (DISEC: Disarmament & International Security Committee)
• Facing the consequences of cultural and religious impositions on women’s rights (UN Women)
• Taking heed of the climate migration crisis (ECOSOC: Economic and Social Council)
• Managing waste disposal from new technologies (UNEA: Environmental Assembly)
• The ramifications of the Mexican war on drugs (SC: Security Council)

All conflicts, inequalities, violations of Human Rights impact on our lives and our future, either positively or negatively. The game is ours to play: we must take action now, be inspired by the GeMun fruitful debates and spread the news in our local communities.

The wind of change will start from this unforgettable and astonishing experience. We are grateful to our MUN director, Donatella Savonitto, who professionally and passionately prepared us to make the most of this GeMUN adventure. We strongly recommend such meaningful and inspiring Citizienship and PCTO project in English (20 hours preparation and 20 hours conference).
